QuickBooks Self-Employed shut down in Canada โ here's your migration guide for 2026
Intuit quietly pulled QBSE from Canadian app stores in 2024 with no public migration plan. If your QBSE app barely works anymore, you're not imagining it. Here's what happened, what to migrate to, and how โ including the 30-minute CSV path.
What actually happened
In 2024, Intuit removed QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) from the Canadian App Store and Google Play Store. Existing subscribers were grandfathered, but no new Canadian signups have been accepted since. The mobile app stopped getting feature updates. Customer support quietly redirected QBSE Canada queries to QuickBooks Online EasyStart, a far heavier (and pricier) accounting product.
The replacement Intuit launched in the US โ QuickBooks Solopreneur, at ~$20 USD/month โ was never sold in Canada. Canadian QBSE users got no direct successor. The official path forward, per Intuit support, is to migrate to QBO EasyStart at $28-39 CAD/month, which is six to eight times what most QBSE users were paying.
Why QBO EasyStart is the wrong answer for most QBSE users
QBSE was a focused product. You used it for three things:
- Snapping receipts and getting them onto specific T2125 line numbers
- Tracking HST per receipt and seeing quarterly Input Tax Credit (ITC) claimable
- A simple monthly dashboard showing income vs expenses
QBO EasyStart includes all of this plus: invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, integrations with payroll, a full general ledger, mileage tracking, and automated bank import. It's a real accounting product. For solo self-employed Canadians who never used QBSE's invoicing or bank-import features, that's a 6ร price hike for capabilities they don't need.
Worse: QBSE's killer feature โ auto-categorization to specific T2125 line numbers in plain Canadian English โ isn't equally polished in QBO EasyStart, which uses generic accounting categories that need mapping at filing time.
What the actual replacement options are
For a focused T2125-and-HST receipt tool at the QBSE price point, the Canadian options as of mid-2026:
R2Sheet (this site) โ $4.99 CAD/month, free 30/month tier
Built specifically for the QBSE-replacement use case. Same 18 T2125 categories with line numbers. Same HST/GST/PST extraction per receipt. Same Meals & Entertainment 50% deductibility cap auto-applied in the dashboard. Output is a Google Sheet you own โ not locked in any vendor's database. See the R2Sheet QBSE-replacement page or the side-by-side comparison.
Wave (Toronto-built, free tier) โ $0 / $16 USD/month Pro
Free for basic invoicing + receipts + simple books. Strong Canadian HST handling. Now an H&R Block subsidiary; recent signals suggest they're de-prioritizing solo freelancers in favor of payroll and small-team features. No native T2125 line mapping; you generate a P&L and your accountant translates to T2125 manually.
NorthOS โ Canadian, bookkeeping-focused
Markets itself explicitly as a QBSE alternative for Canada. Heavier than R2Sheet, lighter than full QBO. Not mobile-pro-focused, so worse fit for drivers / realtors / mobile contractors.
QBO EasyStart โ $28-39 CAD/month
Intuit's recommended path. Right answer if you actually need the full accounting features (invoicing, payroll integration, AR/AP). Wrong answer if you just want what QBSE did.
How to migrate from QBSE in 30 minutes (CSV path)
While your QBSE subscription is still active, you can export your historical data and re-import it into your replacement tool. Here's the step-by-step for migrating to R2Sheet (concept is similar for Wave or NorthOS):
Step 1 โ Export from QBSE (5 minutes)
Sign in to QBSE on the web (the mobile app may not work properly; web is more reliable). Navigate to Reports โ Mileage and Transactions โ Export to CSV. Set the date range to "All time" or your current tax year. Save the CSV.
Also export: any invoices, mileage logs, and the Tax Summary report if you used that feature.
Step 2 โ Sign up for the replacement tool (5 minutes)
For R2Sheet: visit r2sheet.ca/sign-up, connect your Google account. R2Sheet creates an R2Sheet folder in your Google Drive and a tax-template Sheet inside it. Pick the T2125 Self-Employed template if you were using QBSE for sole-proprietorship tracking.
Step 3 โ Paste historical data (15 minutes)
Open your R2Sheet Google Sheet. Click the Receipts tab. Open your QBSE CSV in a separate tab (or in Excel). The columns won't match perfectly โ manually move them so they line up:
- QBSE's "Date" โ R2Sheet column A
- QBSE's "Description" or "Vendor" โ R2Sheet column B (Merchant)
- QBSE's "Total" โ R2Sheet column G
- QBSE's "Tax" (HST) โ R2Sheet column D (HST/GST)
- QBSE's "Category" โ R2Sheet column I (T2125 Category) โ you may need to manually re-map a few category names
Most rows will paste cleanly. Plan to spend 10-15 minutes manually fixing edge cases. If you used QBSE for two or three tax years, do them all in one pass.
Step 4 โ Verify totals match (5 minutes)
Open your QBSE Tax Summary report. Note your year-to-date totals per T2125 line.
In R2Sheet, open the Dashboard tab. Compare line-by-line totals:
- Total business income (T2125 line 8000)
- Total expenses
- HST collected vs ITC claimable
- Net business income (T2125 line 9946)
If they match (within rounding), migration is clean. If they don't, the discrepancy is almost always a category mismatch โ fix in the Sheet directly.
Step 5 โ Cancel QBSE (or let it lapse)
Once R2Sheet is set up and historical data is verified, you can cancel your QBSE subscription. Going forward, every new receipt is captured by R2Sheet (snap with phone or upload PDF), and the data flows into the same Sheet you've already populated with history.
What you gain from the migration
Beyond the price savings (~$280/year going from QBO EasyStart at $28+/month to R2Sheet at $4.99/month), here's what you actually gain:
- Multi-user workspaces. If your spouse, bookkeeper, or business partner helps with receipt capture, they get their own login at no extra cost. QBSE was strictly single-user.
- Multi-location support via tags. If you run more than one business or location, tag each receipt with the location. Filter your Sheet by tag for per-location P&L. QBSE had no equivalent.
- Modern AI extraction. QBSE's OCR was decent in 2018; R2Sheet uses Google Gemini 2.5 Vision. Faster, more accurate, particularly on faded paper receipts and PDF invoices.
- Files in YOUR Google Drive. QBSE stored receipts on Intuit servers โ when Intuit decided to leave Canada, those files were locked behind a discontinued product. With R2Sheet, your receipt images live in your own Drive. If we go away, you keep them.
- Multi-language support. R2Sheet's UI is in English, French, and Mandarin. Useful for Quebec sole props and Chinese-Canadian self-employed.
What you give up (and the workarounds)
Two QBSE features R2Sheet doesn't replicate:
- GPS auto-mileage tracking. QBSE had it built in. R2Sheet's on the roadmap but not shipped. Workaround: pair R2Sheet with MileIQ ($12 CAD/month) for mileage. Combined cost ~$17/month, still cheaper than QBO EasyStart.
- Direct HST NETFILE submission to CRA. QBSE was the only product that did this. R2Sheet outputs the numbers; you (or your accountant) submit through CRA My Business or a tax software like TurboTax. Workaround: copy the four quarterly numbers from R2Sheet's dashboard into the CRA NETFILE form. Takes about 10 minutes per quarter.
Bottom line
QBSE Canada users have been sitting on a slowly degrading product for over a year. Intuit's recommended path (QBO EasyStart) is overkill at 6ร the price. There are better, cheaper, Canadian-native options now โ including R2Sheet, which was built explicitly for this use case.
Migration takes 30 minutes. The savings are real. Don't pay Intuit $336/year for features 80% of which you'll never use.

Frequently asked questions
Is QBSE Canada actually shut down, or just paused?
Effectively shut down. Intuit removed it from Canadian app stores, stopped accepting new signups, and stopped feature development for the Canadian product. Existing subscriptions still work but the product is in maintenance mode at best.
Can my accountant still file my taxes from QBSE?
Yes, while your subscription is active. Most accountants prefer the export-to-CSV workflow either way. R2Sheet's Google Sheet export is even faster for accountants who use spreadsheets or import to Xero/QBO.
Will R2Sheet leave Canada the way QBSE did?
We're a Canadian-built product targeting Canadian-specific tax needs. There's no plan to leave. But more importantly: even if we did, your data lives in YOUR Google Sheet โ not on our servers. You keep it regardless.
What about TurboTax integration?
QBSE had one-click TurboTax handoff. R2Sheet doesn't. You export the Sheet's yearly totals as CSV and paste into TurboTax's self-employment section. Adds ~5 minutes to filing once a year.
